Reunions 2016

January has been a reunion month of sorts for me. We flew back to Manila on the 23rd for a family reunion, and I was able to visit D as well as meet up with the Cath Kidston Sisterhood. Yes, there is such a thing. *Cough* We're still waiting for our Cath Kidston endorsement deal and blog sponsorship. Get on with it! *Cough* Actually, kinulit ko talaga sila. Hehehehe. Chismisan galore na naman, natch. But we were careful when gossiping about other, uhmmm, notable bloggers, lest we get the Tina T. treatment. Hahahahahahaha! Seriously, thank you, Leah and Diane. I had a great time chatting with you two! Thank you sa gifts.

At our favorite rendezvous

The next day,  the whole family trooped to Baguio for the family reunion. Ewan ko ba kung bakit doon pa. I'm not complaining. If you've been reading my blog, you'd know by now that I love that place. I was just wondering 'cause it was still cold in Baguio, and the reunion was held in the [dubious] honor of my two titas who went home from Canada and New Jersey, USA, i.e., both cold, cold places. I mean, why not just go here in Dumaguete, where it is sunshiny all day, everyday? Oh well, like I said, I'm not complaining. It has been so long since I saw my tita from Canada. I was pregnant with Sharkteeth pa when she left for Canada, and ngayon lang sya bumalik. I remember her calling when it was near my due date, comforting me, advising me not to get nervous about giving birth. Well, I wasn't really nervous about it. I figured the human race wouldn't reach this number of population if it's as dangerous as she was purporting it to be. Mas ninenerbyos pa ako nun sa gagastusin ko sa ospital eh. :) My other aunt, Bebeng, visited sometime ago, but I don't remember when exactly. Needless to say, I missed them both and was quite excited to see them again.

The trip to Baguio was uneventful and was fairly quick -- ~4 hours via NLEX and SCTEX. We were all cramped in a van: 1 driver, 6 thandercats, 4 middle-agers/forever young, 3 kiddielets. Given the chance, the kiddielets would have brought their pet Siamese and Maltese. Buti na lang hindi dinala. I cannot share my space again with a dog, no matter how much I love animals. In fairness, comfortable naman. I managed to get dibs sa last row ng van and was able to get some sleep.

We got to St Patrick's Village (SPV) around 10 am and it wasn't check-in time yet.  We proceeded to Mile Hi Camp John Hay, a string of  duty free shops. I was able to buy a couple of stuff, but the store wasn't impressive at all. Their dollar-to-peso conversion rate was close to 50 pesos, 49 if I remember it right, which was significantly higher than the prevailing bank rate that day (January 24). There are lots of clothes, shoes, bags, and food, but many of the clothes are surplus supplies, which you can get cheaply at SM Surplus Shop. What is so galling is that they're selling blatant fakes. Fake bags, fake clothes, fake shoes. Fake! Fake! Fake! I do not have much objection against fake fashion products, but I would want to know if I am buying one, and with Camp John Hay's veneer of kasosyalan, them selling fakes leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Or perhaps that's all there is to it, a veneer.

Anyhoo, after eating brunch, we got a call from SPV that our unit was already available. SPV is beautiful. As in. The villa we got has a driver's quarter, 5 bedrooms (each with either en suite or adjacent bathroom), an attic, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. It's so peaceful and relaxing there, as it's quite far from the noise and hub of the city.

There are electric fireplaces, which are quite helpful when night-time coldness creeps in.

Each unit has its own kitchen and appliances, although I'd suggest that you bring your own plates and utensils. For a group of 14, the plates and utensils provided by the villa weren't enough. We brought a lot of food and chichirya, but for the main meals, we just bought from the city. The villa provides water for each unit. My aunt wasn't so impressed with the kitchen tops, as they were made of wood, which, while sealed, seems to absorb moisture. We had a very hard time figuring out the gas regulator of the stove. There wasn't any crew around to help us, as it was very early in the morning.

Hey, pogggiiiii...

Oh, it has a spacious veranda as well. It was so cold there during the night that I barely stayed for more than a few minutes.

The beds and sheets are plush and comfortable. Pero syempre, may baon akong unan. I can't sleep with just one pillow kasi. The crew will provide you with more linens and pillows for a fee. Mura lang naman. Parang 100 per set. Oh, walang aircon ang rooms. Of course, malamig naman, but I kinda miss the white noise an aircon provides. Windows are screened, and you can open them without having to worry about mosquitoes.

Tulog agad pag aralan; pag TV, puyatan!
There's a pullout bed and a divan in the attic, where the kids stayed. Oh, merong hidden room sa attic. Too bad, the kids figured it out a bit late. We could have pranked them or something. Alas.

Bago mag-umaga, Sharkteeth came knocking and planted herself on the bed. Ako tuloy ang nawalan ng lugar. *Aping-api na naman si mymy.*

On our first day there, most of us went out to tour the city. Three of the thandercat sisters stayed, Madear, Aunt L, and Aunt Bebeng. The effect of jet lag hit Aunt Bebeng, and she promptly fell asleep, kaya di na nakasama. I think Madear wanted to chat with her sisters, hence she stayed. Meanwhile, we went to Mines View, St. Joseph the Worker Church, the Mansion, Botanical Garden, and Burnham Park. Sharteeth and her cousins and the other thundercatz went to Burnham Park, while my cousin, aunt, and I went the ukayan. I was under strict instructions from Sharkteeth to  look for Precious Moments figurines. Alas, I didn't find any. I was able to buy a lot of stuff though. It's a bit frustrating 'cause my cousin and aunt really wanted to go to the ukay yet they weren't able to buy any. Sa totoo lang, sobrang mahal kasi ng high-end designer items sa Baguio. For me, it's not worth buying a 10K+ bag from the ukay. Well, unless it's a Vuitton trunk or an authentic Hermes or Chanel. We proceeded to Burnham Park to meet with the kids and buy dinner.

Dito daw kinasal sina Aga and Charlene

The following day, after checking out, which was soooooo sad because I really loved our stay in SPV, we went to SM for our lunch. Syempre, papalagpasin ba ni Sharkteeth ang chance to go to National Bookstore? Off-topic: Last December, we went to National Bookstore as well and I found a seemingly stray pack of the Fifty Shades trilogy among packs of children's books. I mean, seriously, Fifty Shades in the children's section?! Aba, this January, andun pa rin talaga. Sinasadya ba ito ng National?

After SM, we went to the palengke, then off to Our Lady of Lourdes. The chapel in Lourdes seems to be a new addition to the place. Even the flowers look newly planted.

Uwian na after ng Lourdes. The kids were so exhausted and slept through most of the trip home. If there is one thing that makes this family reunion distinct from other Pinoy reunions, it's that no one is asked to sing, dance, or perform anything. The whole of the Philippines should be thankful. Hahahaha. We stayed in Bulacan briefly, like for a few hours. Our trip back to Dumaguete was on the first flight the next day and we opted to sleep in the airport. Hay, I'm too old na to be doing this sort of thing, sleeping in airports. But either that or possibly miss our flight again. No contest, really.

While I enjoyed every moment of the brief vacation, it felt so bitin. It seems I wasn't able to spend much time with my aunts, and it would be years before they visit again. Oh well, at least, it's something to look forward to. :)

Christmas 2015 Recap

Kamusta naman, February na, ngayon pa lang ang Christmas post ko. Like I mentioned in my previous post, nasilaw ako sa salapi and I accepted way too much work.

The days leading up to Christmas were a blur of shipping orders, wrapping gifts, shopping, etc. Despite me setting a cutoff in my IG selling account, buyers were still placing orders up to the last minute. Hindi ko naman matanggihan. It's like saying no to money. Tangent thought: When I was young, I didn't understand why my parents, despite sleeplessness and exhaustion during Christmas season (i.e., peak firecracker and firework season), never turned down a buyer. Kung minsan hating-gabi, may kakatok para bumili, and kahit antok na antok, they'd let the customers in, give them hot food, and prepare their orders. They had this group of customers na taga-Angeles who always wanted the biggest, loudest, and baddest ass firecrackers -- yung nakakabasag ng bintana. Eh bawal yun, talagang palihim gawin, and talagang special order lang. Ang siste, they'd go sa bahay namin sa gabi and saka lang gagawin ni Fadear. Yung mga customers naman, they'd sleep in their car and wait for Fadear to finish the firecrackers. Tapos uuwi na sila ng madaling-araw. *Sana buhay pa sila and intact pa lahat ng kanilang daliri/kamay/binti/paa.* O hayan, nawala na naman ako. Mabalik tayo. So, I accepted orders despite being past the cutoff. Then I had to prepare TheHusband's and Sharkteeth's gifts/tokens. TheHusband set a budget of 30 pesos(!!!) each for the tokens. Juskopo naman. San naman ako kukuha ng tag-trenta pesos?! Huwag naman ganyan. In the end, I found some nice floral cups for 24 pesos each and I just added a bag of tea. *Victory!*

For TheHusband's gifts naman, I bought some Mason drinking jars and placed assorted chocolates inside. Sayang walang pictures. Nabalot ko na kasi. I discovered my stash of Christmas-themed gift tags and stickers used them to decorate the brown paper I used as wrapper. *Victory!*

Sharkteeth's tokens to her classmates were chocolates and various kiddie stuff like character rulers, stickers for Lego figures, erasers, etc. May separate pang gifts for her friends. Haaaaay...kapoy jud. Due to insistent public demand, pastillas ang contribution ni Sharkteeth sa class Christmas party. Buti na lang, she helped in the preparation. I gave her the recipe and she was the one who mixed it. TheHusband helped and balled the mixture. *Family effort, wagas!* I added some royal icing snowflakes to make it Christmas-y. :) *Victory!*

Christmas pastillas
For her  teachers, I packed some chocolate mix and porcelain spoons in Cath Kidston mugs and decorated the handle. Hindi ko na binalot. I was bleary-eyed already. *Powerless na si Darna.* *Still a victory!*

Aside from my Christmas wreath, eto lang ang Christmas decoration ko. Tssskkk. Oh well. *Not a victory.* *sad trombone*

We left for Manila on the afternoon of the 23rd. Gabi na rin when we landed. Surprisingly, getting a cab was a breeze, and the traffic from NAIA 3 going to the expressway was very light. Kaso pagpasok ng EDSA, ibang istorya na. The traffic was barely moving. TheHusband and Sharkteeth proceeded to the hotel, but I went to Makati to meet up with Onyxx, kaso when I got there, past 10 pm na and papasok na si Onyxx sa cinema. We just had a brief exchange of gifts and chismis (of course!). In fairness, I was able to squeeze in a bit of shopping pa. Hehehehe. Paglabas ko ng mall, isang kilometro yata ang queue sa cab and walang Uber maski isa. Juskopo. I so wasn't prepared to ride a bus. But I did. What was I thinking?! Binilisan ko na lang lakad ko, para kung may mag-isip man na mang-holdap sa akin eh mahirapan sya ng konti na habulin ako. Hahahaha!

On the morning of the 24th, I woke up early and visited D in Heritage. Using Uber to and fro, it was fairly quick. I had an interesting conversation with the driver, who hails from Davao, about Duterte. I won't repeat it here kasi baka biglang tumimbwang na lang ang driver. *cough* *cough* *cough*

Heritage

Nag-Trinoma muna kami and bought gifts for the kids, then we went home na to spend Christmas with my family. As always, riot! Ang mga kids, flushed with cash! Inggit ako. Meanwhile, ang bulsa ko, luhaan pa hanggang ngayon.

Christmas mornings be like
The next morning, I left for Pampanga for my friends/college roommates' annual party. I didn't add the pictures anymore. Puro gilagid lang namin ang makikita dun kasi tawanan kami ng tawanan. I found a remote shutter for my camera phone and kung ano-anong shots ang na-take. *facepalm*

Somewhere in Pulilan
Per family tradition, we went to Baguio. *blah blah blah* You know the drill: KaTuGa (kain-tulog-gala). Add ukay-ukay (flea market) to that, and you have our itinerary. Oh, we had to shoot some spiels for Sharkteeth's vlogging project.

We got back to Bulacan on the early hours of the 30th, and we spent New Year there. It's been so long since I celebrated New Year in the firecracker capital of the Philippines, pero pansin ko, it's not the same anymore. Dati parang kumukulo ang paligid with all the lights and noise, pero last New Year was a bit more sober. O baka naman kasi tulog lang ako kaya di ko napansin. We left early for our trip back kasi ayaw naming maiwanan ng eroplano. Kaso ang aga naman namin and we had time to go to Makati pa. I gorged myself on Kumori cheesecakes! Yes, "cheesecakeS" -- plural! Hahahaha!!!

The flight was on time and uneventful.

Heto ang tragic. Pagdating namin sa bahay, Sharkteeth noticed that Bacon, TheHamster, lost weight. When I held her, totoo nga. She was sooooo light. I could feel the bones. It turned out the damned ants stole all of the hammie's seeds and pellets and stored them on a mound a foot away from the cage. It must be so sad for Bacon to see all her food being taken and stored a foot away and she couldn't do anything about it. Nagtiis na lang sya sa tubig. Kaluoy. Good thing she didn't die of starvation. Meanwhile, I'm still waging a war with the ants. It's ON. It's SOOOOO ON!!! "You want war? I’ll give you war. I’ll be there in my red stilettos!"

Ipaglalaban kita, Bacon! Babangon ako at durugin ko sila!

Masamang damo. Hehehehe.

Heeeeeeyyyyyy!!!

Heeeeeeyyyyyy!!!

Just in case someone, ANYONE(!), is missing me...I'm still alive. Busy-busy-han muna ako. For the love of money, I accepted way too much work, and after coming back from the family Christmas vacation, I could barely squeak a peep. Soooooo....it's officially past the Christmas season, and I have yet to post Christmas-related stuff. Pabalik na lang kami ng Baguio sa weekend, hindi ko pa rin na-po-post yung Baguio trip namin last Christmas. Ay, sus! Then again, lagi naman kaming nasa Baguio and we just go to the same places. Sa totoo lang, ayoko naman talaga ng too much activities. R&R and eating lang talaga gusto ko dun, and flea market shopping, of course (not much fabulous finds, unlike last summer). Well, the coming weekend will surely be a bit different. It's a family reunion and it's going to be crazy. Sa my maternal side ko kasi yun. The noise will be unprecedented. And there will be chaos. O sya, I have to get back to work and finish all my files before I leave. Next time na lang.

Wear earplugs on January 24 and 25. Maingay talaga pamilya ko. As in.

Vintage Love: Lady Dior Patent Cannage Pochette

Let me get this straight, di ako brand conscious. Kahit ano, pwede sa akin. BUT it must be pretty and sturdy. And most of the times, yung mga branded ang pretty and sturdy. Bakit ba ako defensive? Hehehe. Pasakalye ko lang yan kasi I wanted to post one of my precious Baguio ukay finds: Lady Dior patent cannage pochette.

I mistakenly referred to the stitching as "cannelle" -- mali pala, it should be "cannard." Anyway, when I saw it in the flea market (ukay), I was immediately taken because of the high-quality patent leather with lambskin lining as well as the even and straight stitching. I have an obsession with even stitching. Ewan ko ba, di ako matahimik pag pangit ang tahi. I know, I know, may gamot ang mga ganitong conditions. Hehehe. While the cannage stitching reminded me of Dior, I wasn't expecting it to be one. So I was pleasantly surprised when I was cleaning it and turned it inside out. Wow! Just wow! It's marked "Christian Dior Paris"  on one of the card sleeves, and the serial code and country of origin are stamped on another sleeve. Bongga!!!

It's similar to this, but mine has a north-south design, instead of east-west. If only I can capture the softness and suppleness of the lambskin leather (*sorry, little lambie*) or the high-gloss shine of the patent cowhide. Ganda 'no? While the bag itself is flawless, it was missing its chain strap and Dior charms. I easily fixed the former, but the latter is a bit difficult to find online. Nevertheless, paying 100 pesos for a 500-dollar bag is not a bad deal anymore. Even with its charms missing. Besides, I'm charming enough for the both of us, right? Hehehehe!

Ayan, di daw brand conscious, pero kilig na kilig sa find.

Pwede na akong mag-donya-donyahan. Hehehehe.

Cutie Baguio Ukay Finds

As promised, here are a few of my Baguio finds. I still couldn't find the others, so hindi ko ma-post lahat. I don't remember exactly how much each cost, but all were pretty affordable. Ang dami ko nang PR stuff. I am not even actively collecting...napansin ko na lang, dumarami na sila. Derdo gave me a Peter Rabbit plate+bowl set in a quilted basket, and it's so adorable and charming. *Thank you, Derdo!* I'll post it in the future -- it needs a post of its own kasi nga super cute.
